Hazel Stone, who is just starting her junior year in high school, is desperate to make new friends. Tired of the default group she’s a part of, Hazel wants to be a member of the Pretty Little Devils, which consists of perfect popular girls. To her surprise, Sylvia Orly, the leader of the PLDs, agrees, and soon Hazel is inducted into the group, which subsists on secret parties during babysitting jobs, horror movies, and practical jokes. Meanwhile, Hazel has eyes on Matty Vardeman — but so does Breona Wu, the head cheerleader and Sylvia’s mortal enemy. Lucky for Hazel, he chooses the newly “damned” PLD instead of the cheerleader. Unfortunately this makes Breona extremely angry, and she and Hazel begin getting into fights in class. Sounds like typical high school drama. Well, it is — until things turn sinister. All of the PLDs, including low-key Carolyn, shy Ellen and giggly Megan, start receiving strange phone calls and text messages referring to them as “bad babysitter[s]” and threatening to kill them. None of the girls know who’s responsible. Before long, students are being killed and suspicions are falling on the PLDs. Two young "hippie" bikers, Wyatt and Billy sell some dope in Southern California, stash their money away in their gas-tank and set off for a trip across America, on their own personal odyssey looking for a way to lead their lives. However Wyatt and Billy also discover people attempting 'alternative lifestyles' who are resisting this narrow-mindedness, there is always a question mark over the future survival of these drop-out groups. The gentle hippie community who thank God for 'a place to stand' are living their own unreal dream. The rancher they encounter and his Mexican wife are hard-pushed to make ends meet. Even LSD turns sour when the trip is a bad one. Death comes to seem the only freedom. When they arrive at a diner in a small town, they are insulted by the local rednecks as weirdo degenerates. They are arrested on some minor pretext by the local sheriff and thrown in jail where they meet George Hanson, a liberal alcoholic lawyer. He gets them out and decides to join them on their trip to New Orleans in time for Mardi Gras.

Jack Nicholson stars as Poet a down and out gas station attendant who is able to make his way into the local chapter of the San Franciscan Hell's Angels (a couple of years before they wreaked havoc at Altamont), which are led by Buddy (Adam Roarke). Poet also becomes attracted to Buddy's flaky, promiscuous girlfriend, Shill (future California state senator Sabrina Scharf), but a relationship can only lead to trouble. Poet is tough and he fits right in, but he is a bit more morally conscious than the other Angels and seems to want to go on to better things even though his life is going absolutely nowhere.
